It goes without saying that air travel is, and will continue to be, a topic of intense scrutiny for the foreseeable future as we adjust our lives around the pandemic. This session explores the role of aviation to the international spread of the disease, the risk of in-flight transmission of COVID-19 and other infectious diseases, other travel-related risks associated with COVID-19, mitigation strategies airlines and countries are putting in place, and systems to help airlines manage in-flight medical events, including infectious diseases. Finally, we shall discuss the “new normal:” what to expect in the near future.

In this session, you’ll learn:

  • The risk of in-flight transmission of infectious diseases is very low.
  • The commercial aircraft cabin is, contrary to popular belief, less risky than other indoor environments.
  • Additional mitigation strategies to make the risk almost negligible.
  • Risk is not exclusively related to the aircraft environment per se, but to the entire journey experience.

Dr. Paulo M. Alves, MD, MSc, FAsMA, is the Global Medical Director, Aviation Health for MedAire. As MedAire’s liaison with civil aviation regulators and industry associations, he regularly shares his aviation medicine expertise at conferences and has published numerous scientific papers on topics relevant to the industry. Paulo was previously the medical director for Varig Brazilian Airlines. Currently president-elect of the Ibero-American Aerospace Medical Association, he is a member of the International Academy of Aerospace Medicine, fellow of the Aerospace Medical Association, member of the National Business Aviation Association Safety Committee. .
