Survey

A total of 262 U.S. organizations with a minimum of 1,000 employees participated in the 2006/2007 Strategic Rewards survey, which was conducted by WorldatWork and Watson Wyatt. These organizations, employing nearly 5 million employees, represent the full spectrum of industry sectors and geographic regions. This employer survey was complemented by an employee survey completed by a nationally representative sample of more than 1,100 employees. Our report highlights the differences in employer and employee perspectives as well as examines employer programs.

Executive Summary

In the last few years, a number of converging forces — globalization, increased competition and rising health care costs — have set the stage for a new employer–employee relationship. As employers try to hold down costs, they continue to shift away from a paternalistic relationship with employees by offering less job security, reducing benefits and increasing emphasis on performance-based pay. Because these changes reduce employee commitment, they increase the challenges of attracting and retaining talent.
