The Gig Economy: The Joint Tax Consequences of Contractor Versus Employee Classification
Third, while the implicit assumption is that both the employee and independent contractor buy health insurance on their own, and pay the same price, the contractor is allowed to deduct 100% of health insurance premiums up to the amount of their earned income, as an adjustment to income, while the employee is only allowed to deduct health insurance and other medical expenses in excess of 7.5% of adjusted gross income, and only then if itemizing (i.e., Schedule A).
