Presenters
Margret Vilborg Bjarndóttir
Associate Professor of Management Science and Statistics, UMD

Dr. Bjarndóttir is an Associate Professor of Management Science and Statistics at Robert H. Smith School of Business. 

Dr. Bjarnadóttir’s research focuses on data-informed decision-making, using optimization and machine learning. A part of her research agenda focuses on pay equity, where her work focuses on how to close demographic pay gaps and fair application of Ai in HR. Her work has been published in leading academic journals and has been covered by outlets such as HBR, Forbes, BBC, HR magazine and others. 

She teaches data analytics and has received multiple teaching awards including being named the best MBA professor by Poets & Quants. She holds multiple editorial board positions, but her focus right now is on two special issues on diversity equity and inclusion. She founded PayAnalytics, a workplace equity platform that is closing pay gaps around the world. 

Dr. Bjarnadóttir holds a B.Sc. degree in Mechanical and Industrial Engineering from the University of Iceland and a Ph.D. in Operations Research from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. 

Susan Brown
Senior Director, Compensation at Siemens
GRP, CCP

Susan is a Senior Director of Compensation at Siemens, responsible for Siemens Americas compensation and reward programs. Her scope spans rewards & recognition, employee pay, incentive compensation and equity compensation.  In addition to leading Compensation for the region, she is the Total Rewards Strategy advisor to Siemens’ global Compensation & Benefits head. 

Prior to Siemens, Susan spent 14 years at Mercer HR Consulting, a career path that took her from Compensation Analyst to Project Manager to Principal.  Susan worked in the Washington DC, Melbourne Australia, and New York offices, working on salary management projects, job hierarchy, incentive compensation design, sales effectiveness, and performance management programs. 

Susan is a long-time WorldatWork member, is GRP and CCP certified, and serves as a member of the Global Advisory Council.  In the past, Susan served on the WorldatWork Society Board, and was Chairperson of the Compensation Advisory Council. She holds a Bachelor’s degree from Cornell University, and a Masters of Business Administration from University of Virginia Darden School of Business.

Kris D. Meade
Partner, Crowell & Moring LLP

Kris D. Meade is co-chair of Crowell & Moring's Labor & Employment Group. He is also a member of the firm's Management Board and Executive Committee. He counsels and represents employers in the full range of employment and traditional labor law matters, including individual and class action lawsuits filed under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Age Discrimination in Employment Act, ERISA, and companion state statutes. Kris represents employers in connection with union organizing campaigns, collective bargaining, labor arbitrations, and unfair labor practice litigation. In 2020, Chambers USA recognized Kris as a leading labor and employment lawyer.

Kris also counsels and represents employers in connection with pay equity and affirmative action compliance matters, including the Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs' corporate management (or "glass ceiling") reviews and affirmative action compliance audits. Kris has particular experience directing sophisticated statistical analyses in connection with employment class action litigation, compensation audits conducted by the Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs, and pay equity self-audits conducted by employers to ensure compliance with federal regulations, Title VII, and the Equal Pay Act. He frequently teams with labor economists who serve as consulting or testifying experts in private litigation or government enforcement actions. In addition, Kris has substantial experience in managing and coordinating large-scale discovery in nationwide, serial litigation.

Kris likewise represents and counsels employers in business tort cases, Sarbanes-Oxley whistleblower retaliation matters, matters involving the protection of trade secrets, and litigation over non-competition agreements and other restrictive covenants. He also counsels employers with regard to their use of predictive analytics and AI in the employment and personnel decision-making context.

Kris received a Bachelor of Arts summa cum laude from the University of Michigan, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. He graduated with honors from The George Washington University Law School. Kris is also a member of the Advisory Board to the D.C. Bar Pro Bono Program's Community Economic Development Project.
