The Gig Economy: The Joint Tax Consequences of Contractor Versus Employee Classification
Holding everything constant, ignoring state and local income taxes and other taxes such as paying into unemployment or worker’s compensation funds, and assuming $40,000 in compensation as in Veliotis and Balsam (2022), the benefit to a company of independent contractor status would be the after-tax savings of the employer portion of the Social Security and Medicare taxes, which is $2,417 (see Table 1).

Working from My Car: An Examination of Food-Delivery and Ridesharing Services in the U.S. and India
The appeal of this type of contract-based employment relationship model for companies is more productivity while not having to pay for benefits (health insurance, paid time off, retirement programs), not having to pay minimum wage, or follow overtime laws (unemployment insurance, workers’ compensation, and payroll taxes) and not even having to own a fleet of vehicles to compete in the industry as taxi companies and some restaurants must do (Drake 2020; Jaffe 2021; Kolmar 2022).
