- Well-Being at Wipro: Creating a Culture of Care, on-demand webinar
For well-being to truly take hold, it needed to be embedded into everyday ways of working so seeking help felt natural rather than exceptional.
Wipro Limited is a multinational technology company based in Bengaluru, India. It provides information technology (IT), consulting and business process services, and is one of India’s Big Six IT services companies.
Wipro’s approach to well-being is grounded in the belief that well-being is a shared responsibility and an intrinsic part of how the organization functions. Early corporate initiatives such as Mitr (based on a Hindi word meaning “friend” or “ally”) and an employee assistance program (EAP) created trusted, confidential avenues for support, laying an important foundation. Over time, however, it became clear that standalone programs weren’t enough. For well-being to truly take hold, it needed to be embedded into everyday ways of working so seeking help felt natural rather than exceptional.
This insight prompted a shift from expanding individual offerings to reimagining the workplace as a space where people could flourish physically, mentally, emotionally and socially. By 2021, this thinking culminated in an integrated well-being framework built around body, mind and community — supported by visible leadership sponsorship, cultural reinforcement and employee-centric resources that normalized well-being as part of daily life.
From Perks to Purpose
Conventional well-being benefits such as gym memberships or one-off wellness sessions often addressed surface-level needs. Wipro moved beyond this model, focusing instead on building a well-being system that acknowledged diverse identities, life stages and personal circumstances. This transition shifted mindsets and operations, reframing well-being as a collective endeavor enabled by empathetic leadership, accessible tools and sustained commitment from senior leaders.
The organization adopted a balanced model that recognized the role of individuals, managers and leaders. By doing so, well-being evolved from a set of isolated interventions into a lived experience — shaping how employees work, lead and connect with one another each day.
A Systemic Framework
Wipro’s new approach encompasses three levels.
- Meso (empowering individuals): At the individual level, employees are supported through tools, platforms and communities that enable personal ownership of well-being. Mitr provides a safe space for emotional connection, while the EAP offers multilingual, confidential support across emotional, financial, legal and caregiving needs. Physical well-being programs promote movement through fitness sessions, yoga and preventive activities. A well-being platform named Dot brings resources together in one place, enabling personalized well-being experiences. Financial well-being initiatives guide employees across life stages through literacy programs, planning tools and access to interest-free loans, salary advances, and region-specific insurance and pension coverage.
- Micro (equipping managers): Managers shape day-to-day culture and play a crucial role in team well-being. Wipro emphasized empathetic leadership by equipping managers with practical tools and learning resources. A course titled “Spotting the Signs” enables managers to identify early indicators of emotional distress and support team members effectively. The Wipro People Manager (WPM) blended learning module integrates well-being into leadership development, and plug-and-play resources provide simple, actionable ways for managers to support teams without additional administrative burden. This focus reinforces empathy as an essential and measurable capability.
- Macro (leadership modeling): Leadership involvement reinforces the message that well-being is fundamental to organizational success. Leaders participate in formal discussions, campaigns and global initiatives such as Culture Conversations, #ItStartsWithMe, the Global Well-Being Fest and the 1in4 Summit. Their visible commitment signals well-being isn’t a side activity but a central part of how success is achieved. Well-being also is integrated into Wipro’s environmental, social and governance (ESG) goals, with progress transparently reported across regions.
The Well-Being Ecosystem
Central to the approach are focuses on the body, mind and community.
- Body (supporting physical vitality): Wipro’s physical well-being efforts evolved from a venture titled “Fit for Life” into a global ecosystem supporting preventive health and daily vitality. Employees access virtual and onsite doctor consultations, yoga and high-intensity interval training (HIIT) sessions, biometric screenings, and themed health resources designed to strengthen healthy habits. Wellness challenges and curated content across regions make well-being engaging and accessible. The Spirit of Wipro annual global charity run, now spanning more than two decades, brings employees and families together to participate in a shared cause.
- Mind (emotional and financial resilience): Mental and emotional well-being are treated with the same seriousness as business performance. Wipro’s EAP continues to anchor support with confidential services. Gear Up for Mental Resilience has reached tens of thousands of employees, equipping them with foundational skills to strengthen emotional well-being. “Spotting the Signs” has enhanced manager capability worldwide by helping them identify distress and respond with empathy. Campaigns such as #StayStrong and the 1in4 Summit encourage open discussions and normalize the topic of mental health. Financial well-being support complements emotional well-being. Employees at all career stages benefit from planning tools, literacy programs and resources that enable budgeting, saving and retirement preparation. Region-specific policies, emergency financial assistance and centralized access through Dot platform pages ensure employees have timely and relevant financial support.
- Community (fostering belonging and purpose): Belonging is recognized as a foundational well-being driver. An effort titled “Wipro Cares” enables employees to contribute to education, healthcare, disaster relief and environmental sustainability. The “Be the Change” campaign broadens opportunities for micro and family-inclusive volunteering, enabling participation during breaks and weekends. Employee resource groups (ERGs) build community around shared identities and experiences, fostering connection and inclusion. “Chai Pe Shiksha,” which translates to “Education Over Tea,” extends well-being learning to ground staff, reinforcing the belief that well-being must include all organizational contributors.
Making Well-Being Seamless
Technology enhances accessibility and impact by bringing well-being support into everyday workflows. The company’s WiNow chatbot provides round-the-clock guidance, routing employees to resources and delivering personalized nudges based on life stage or context. An app named “Stretch and Pause” encourages movement breaks to support physical well-being. A chatbot named “AIRA” provides first-level counseling support to the company’s Trust and Safety teams. DOT consolidates all well-being offerings into a single, intuitive destination. Gamified points and rewards recognize participation and encourage consistent practices.
Recognition and Outcomes
Wipro’s comprehensive well-being approach has received global recognition (e.g., Mental Health America’s Bell Seal, Newsweek’s America’s Greatest Workplaces for Mental Well-Being list, People Matters Prostar Awards, Global Healthy Workplace Awards, Indeed’s Work Well-Being Index).
Measurable outcomes reflect meaningful engagement across the organization. More than 85,000 employees have completed resilience training, and more than 28,000 managers have strengthened their ability to recognize emotional distress through “Spotting the Signs.” The Global Well-Being Fest recorded more than 45,000 meaningful touchpoints. Volunteer participation continues to rise across countries, demonstrating the growing strength of the community ecosystem.
Lessons Learned
Wipro’s experience highlights that building a well-being culture requires commitment, cocreation and patience. Leadership modeling is essential, and initiatives should reflect the lived experiences of employees. Measurement should focus not only on participation but on how people feel. Local relevance ensures global frameworks deliver meaningful impact. The evolution from transactional offerings to a transformational culture of care continues to shape Wipro into a future-ready, human-centered organization.
