While research indicates that work engagement has a positive association with performance, it has also been found to mediate the relationship between several variables, notably leader-member exchange, workplace ostracism and job crafting (Khan and Malik 2017; Leung et al. 2011), on performance outcomes, such as creative performance, and extra-role behaviors such as knowledge-sharing and innovation (Karatepe and Olugbade 2016).
