Using rewards such as monetary incentives to influence behavior has been advocated based on theories such as operant learning (Skinner 1953) and expectancy theory, which advocate for reinforcing behavior by linking it to desirable consequences, and agency theory (Jensen and Meckling 1976), which advocates linking rewards to company goals to align the goals of employees to those of the company.
